Photography is the main medium of his work, although he has also explored sculpture, video and drawing. He has a poetic and intensely subjective view of human relations and psychological mechanisms, often depicted using self-portraits approached with certain ambiguity. His work dismantles the human need to separate fiction and reality, past and future, emotion and reason. Love, heartbreak, the absurd, sexuality and the individual and social struggle are recurrent themes treated with tears and humour.
There is a link in his photographs and videos between his own existence confronted with others: objects, friends, family or animals. Sourrouille has found his own style in which he uses different resources to express himself, whether by dressing up, hiding or relating his character and his body in different situations and environments with different subjects.
‘In the ‘A 4 patas’ [On All Fours], a poor geisha, a princess in a threatened space film, flees under a swirl of glances towards that offer of cosmetics that restore an ancestral art, repairing her docility given the ferocity with which she jumps towards us from the frames in which she remains enclosed.’ (José Lastra, 1999).
The project is presented as a cinematographic sequence: a series of images show a whitish, crawling, elusive body, enclosed in chopped frames. The work is thus situated in a hybrid territory between the intimate and the theatrical, where the body becomes a space of constant interrogation about identity, exposure and desire.
