What does a website sound like? And that of an artist? The virtual space has become a fundamental setting to disseminate centres, projects and the artists themselves. The might of this medium has made it a must, while being seen as a supportive and accessible setting for those artists who do not have sufficient visibility in the projects and exhibitions in the physical space. There are increasingly more artists who have their own website and emerging artists can be said to be the vast majority.
Colectiva para piano [Collective for Piano] is a project based on reinterpreting the source code of thirteen websites of artists who were BilbaoArte grant holders, one for each year between 1999 and 2011. The union, mix and subsequent reinterpretation of those thirteen code fragments leads to a composition for piano several minutes in length, where the aspect to be curated is not the artist’s work, but rather the computer code of their website. Furthermore, the final outcome does not take the form of an exhibition, but rather a musical composition.
The curator and artistic work of the project consists of obtaining those lines of code from different artists’ websites; the lines are then combined in an appropriate way to produce a musical composition of interest, in the same way that works by different authors are arranged for a conventional exhibition.
