Coca’s work focuses on researching the properties of paint and is a reflection on the possibilities of the medium itself. Knowing the elements that allow painting to happen, recognising and surrendering to its limits. The artist considers painting to be a gesture, an act driven by a wish, a wish to see something, that something that still does not exist. Rendering visible that force that takes shape through the material, colour, and brushstroke.
The pictorial space is established by a set of multiple coats of paint that overlap and deny or affirm each other. He considers the picture to be a place, painting as an image of a captured moment, a material present.
Circulatory System starts from the desire to produce two images that, placed together, also function as one. One would be the depiction of a hollow form and the other, the very form of the hollow. Coca works by limiting the colour range of the work to red, blue, green and a grey resulting from those colours. This process involves drawing and filling the forms prior to proceeding to break their static nature by means of destroying the constructed forms, thus generating new coats of pigment and compositional planes that highlight the depth of the work.
The artist is interested in that gesture of breaking. Generating tension in the pictorial space by opposing forces and finding harmony. Creating the form by strokes. Overlaying coats and generating thickness brings out the body of the paint. Whirling on the surface of the work. Constraining, keeping a careful eye on the perimeter; entering and leaving the margins. Occupying everything. Removing any excess. Setting a rhythm, advancing, and retreating, or what he calls going inwards.
