Her work delves into the mythologies of American vernacular architecture, tracing its evolution from Thoreau’s thought to Detroit’s urban decline. In Pequeños crímenes sin importancia, she uses painting to question how the audiovisual hegemony of the US has shaped a collective imagination in which suburban housing is the ultimate symbol of aspiration and success.
The artist’s book is a “pop-up” construction of the painting Wait for Me There. It consists of a piece of paper that is printed and folded onto itself, made up of four layers, from which parts of the image have been cut out to create a three-dimensional object with a tunnel effect, adding depth and a sense of perspective. It’s a type of effect that, according to the artist, her work handles well and connects with the initial goal of the project developed during the residency: to take a two-dimensional object (the painting) and move it towards a more object-like, three-dimensional form, almost transforming it into a model of the original piece.
Juana García-Pozuelo (Logroño, 1978) is a visual artist based in Bilbao, with a degree in Fine Arts from UPV/EHU and a Master’s degree in Artistic Creation and Research from the same university. With international training at New York’s School of Visual Arts, she has been developing a figurative painting style since 2001, resulting in 12 solo exhibitions nationwide. Her career stands out for prestigious residency grants at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, Bilbaoarte, Lanzarote and Snug Harbor in New York. Recognised in 2024 by the Basque Government and twice awarded by the Parliament of La Rioja, her career stands out for a robust, sustained artistic output in the field of the visual arts.
