Azala [Skin] is part of the 12 Pictures of Finding a Position in Space series, which takes 12 frames from the Azkorri árnyéka alatt [Azkorriren itzalpean / Bajo la sombra de Azkorri / Under the Shadow of Azkorri] essay, produced during her residency at BilbaoArte in 2020. Azkorri árnyéka alatt is a visual essay that explores the spaces of the image, starting from a photography taken at Azkorri beach. The video analyses how a change of perspective can change how an image is received; it is built from the position of a gesture of Még kér a nép [Red Psalm] (1972) by the Hungarian film maker Miklós Jancsó.
This gesture later appears in photograph of Yelena Grigoryeva, the LGBTQIA+ Russian activist. The work examines this distinctive symbol by tracing connections with queer sexuality itself, the aesthetic depiction of Communism, along with issues of dispossession and appropriation.
A selection of frames from this film were also included in the Azkorri árnyéka alatt solo show at BilbaoArte, held between 2 September and 1 October 2021.
Eszter Katalin (Budapest, 1991) is an artist and film maker living in Vienna. Her work develops an essay and documentary experimental practice from a queer-feminist and lesbian perspective, focused on the politics of the gaze, the ethical representation in the moving image and political struggles.
