The changing contemporary urban environment is the source for Leticia Gaspar’s painting. She uses colour, light and composition to expressively depict architecture. She is interested in exploring the idea of emptiness, abandonment or silence and often resorts to buildings in ruins, closed businesses or billboards without advertisements to suggest the dehumanization of space. The atmosphere she builds connects with the post-apocalyptic image of the city handled by cinema or literature, but from a very personal assimilation in which she takes elements from different photographs and arranges them as a collage in a single frame.
Her research is aimed at creating a certain estrangement in the viewer with the aforementioned elements, but also with the incorporation of texts, reflective, political or protest messages devised by her or extracted from the places she documents.
Leticia Gaspar (Bilbao, 1982) graduated in Fine Arts from the University of the Basque Country – UPV/EHU and the Diploma of Advanced Studies in painting from the same university. She is a multidisciplinary artist who works with painting, photography, illustration and comics.
