Amaia works in sculpture, using drawing and the photographic image. Her projects draw on the autobiographical, universal problems where she addresses the political and the personal perspectives. The process and the choice of material stand out in her technique.
Column, structure, verticality. Verticalidad [Verticality] and Ejercicio de pliegue [Exercise in Folding] are part of a series of works known as Manto Flotante [Floating Mantle], a concept that refers to those masses of pleats present in the textiles of Baroque and Renaissance sculptures, which starts as a premise and yearning for classical sculpture. This idea speaks of time and temporariness by means of sensitivity and affections. Something that allows the artist to reflect on the drive to create as an artist in relation to the defunct nature of the human being, who required to follow the linear course of time running in one direction, finds through the haphazardness of art a pretext for continuing onwards and finding that moment that becomes an event.
In Verticalidad, a white glue skin hangs nearly from ceiling; its irregular surface has folds, bubbles and the very impurities of the atmosphere to which it has been exposed while changing from liquid to solid. Its verticality is based on iron rods, a photolith film of the Caryatids of the Erechtheion and a fibre glass crate. An interplay of overlapping layers is created, where the materials are mimicked and generate a type of filter. Ejercicio de pliegue [Exercise in Folding], in turn, is a proposal in the form of an artist book where the artist alters the logics and conventionality typical of a book to produce an installation where white glue and overlapping of layers, yet again, become structural volumes.
His work explores the intersection between the digital and physical work, establishing connections between the tangible and intangible by means of 3D pieces to which he adds elements of the real world; he sometimes uses videos that contain virtual simulations of dynamics and physical phenomena.
