‘Does utopia only dwell in fiction imagined as an unattainable chimera or can we find a real foothold in our daily panorama from which to make it present?
This work starts from an exploration through the banks of the Bilbao Estuary with the purpose of verifying the existence of certain places that go unnoticed in our daily toing-and-froing, configuring a part that escapes the collective imagination and the collective construction that we have been generating around these locations.
As I walk along, I sometimes come face to face with places in the public space where ‘the imagined’ is verified in the real… They are the group of children who play outside the place where they are and recreate with conviction a distant land. They are the people who find the fertile space where they can plant their vegetable patch in the middle of a road junction and protect it with flimsy fences that are interwoven from various recycled materials. They are the anglers who build and re-build systems on the banks of the Bilbao estuary where they can rest their rod while they talk. They are the
roup of immigrants who meet every Sunday on the improvised basketball ground among the weeds of the wasteland…
All these spaces in permanent transformation constitute the localised utopias that are proposed in this project, places marked by a series of particular circumstances that arise from the appropriation of public space by certain individuals or communities.’ (Text by the artist about the work).
