The Gerizpean project seeks to showcase the landscape, by bringing the lights and shadows of the forest to the space of the workshop, thus proposing a new phase in its pictorial development. Veva Linaza thus produced a series of videos lasting between 15 and 20 minutes, which recorded the atmospheric transformation of a place by means of shifting the light. The videos are close to the photographic approach that uses a fixed shot to, capture the subtle swaying of the shadows of branches, leaves and vegetation as they are screened on white fabrics. Those fabrics structure and mark out the space pictorially, and allow the passing of real time to be represented, which is often not noticeable to the human eye, but able to transform a place significantly in just fifteen minutes.
In the workshop, the videos were screened on a pictorial surface and turned into acrylics on canvas. In this process, the movement of the video screening and the pictorial action not only question the passing of time in the landscape, but also open up a new reflection on the very time of the painting.
Gerizpean means ‘in the shadow of the tree’. It is a different shadow from those cast in different circumstances, and changes according to the tree that causes it. It is not the same to be under the shade of a pear tree as to be under that of a medlar or an apple tree. Thus, the word in Basque adapts to the name of each tree: madariondopean [pear tree], mizpirondopean [medlar tree], sagarrondopean [apple tree].
