Surfaces: silent surfaces of rocks exposed to time. Blocks that contain political and historical memory. Quarried stone quarried and stone that fell naturally.
The volume, the form and the wealth of hues can be seen. And in them and with them, the rifts, the terrain on which the pieces are arranged as the result of the fall. A composition that is almost choreography. And each element on those surfaces reveals and evokes a story.
Marie Sommer’s project is a journey in search of traces. A journey that goes from the Belchite ruins to the caves by the Bay of Biscay and their primeval vestiges. A journey that took in the Geological Mining Museum of Madrid; the landscapes of Aragón and Asturias; the Basque quarries of Markina; and even the Japan of the reborn and reinvented city of Hiroshima where the lament and threat of the nuclear apocalypse can be felt.
