I-am-a-lot-like-you is a series of small-scale sculptures. It departs from a literal use of the signifier, which is then subverted through reproduction and accumulation. Made from molds of relatively everyday objects, the works consist of articulations of two or three elements between which the artist identifies formal or conceptual equivalences. That is, they are structured according to a logic of abstraction, sacrificing the object’s individual, concrete meaning in favor of a relatively elusive meaning of the whole.
The project draws on the “camp” logic named by Susan Sontag in Notes on “Camp”, according to which things are understood in quotation marks: a test tube is not a test tube, it is a “test tube.” A boxing glove is a “boxing glove.” As Sontag writes, “the essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.”
The title refers both to the logic of the mold and reproduction, and to the configuration of a queer subjectivity that presents itself as strange—almost abject in some of the pieces—while nonetheless asserting its equality with the viewer.
Daniel Llaría (Logroño, 1985) is a multidisciplinary artist who works with sculpture as a medium that allows him to approach other languages such as audiovisual and drawing. His sculptural installations are the result of lengthy research processes in which, through the use of materials as heterogeneous as fabric or concrete, aspects related to class identities, power relations and sexuality emerge in the construction of collective and ideological imaginaries. Tensioned, suspended and always in consonance with the architecture that supports them, the mark and imprint of the artist who has worked on them is perceptible in his pieces.
