Antton Goikoetxea’s work explores the intersection between the digital and physical work, establishing connections between the tangible and intangible by means of 3D pieces to which he adds elements of the real world; he sometimes uses videos that contain virtual simulations of dynamics and physical phenomena.
Kareharriak is a project that seeks to establish a dialogue between the architecture of the tangible world and the intangible; it reflects on the role of technology and digital language in our understanding of reality. The work consisting of scanning sedimentary limestone that has been altered by nature and its introduction in a 3D printing software where the rocks are arranged in a virtual space. Once there, the program generates support structures, which – once the rocks are printed and assembled – secure the whole and define the final form of the pieces. The supports determine the distribution of the stones in the space, both in the real and in the virtual worlds. Those supports simulate organic forms that embrace the rock, serve as a base, stick to it, cross it and run through the cavities generated by the mechanical and chemical erosion over hundreds of years.
In this exhibition, Pieces 8, 11 and 12 are complemented by a 3D animation that shows their digital versions, driven by simulations of physical phenomena, where the rules and times are distorted as regards the real world. While the rocks act as a physical representation of the passing of time, reflecting the tether of the material world, the artificial supports, the virtual simulation of impossible dynamics and an accelerated time reflect the influence of the digital spaces in our way of understanding and inhabiting the world.
