Manzanas del paraíso albinas [Albino Apples of Paradise] is a digital photo taken in 1999. It belongs to the Frutas del Paraíso [Fruits of Paradise] series, consisting of 10 images, the outcome of experimenting with a home scanner and then photoshopping them. Digital editing software has allowed me to approach my photography in a similar way to sculpture: removing and adding material, objects, changing colour and forms until the idea takes shape, with the added bonus of the virtuality of the image and the tangible nature of the scenario.
Plant and animal fusion and hybridisation, mutation or genetic transformation are processes where the real, reality and fiction are structured and disassembled in experiential hybrids. Everything in these images and many of my sculptures is simultaneously credible and wrong, suspect and accurate. It is all depicted as a representational crossroads that calls on remembering and narrative, memory and fiction, being tangible and an illusion, lived experience and the force of imagination. And the springs of fiction become indiscernible from the mechanisms of the conscience.
