No somos ni de aquí ni de allí [We Are Not From Here or There] was what a woman said when she set off on a coach journey from Bilbao to Monterrubio de la Serena, a small town in the province of Badajoz on 3 August 2015. The artist took a hundred and fifty photographs to document that pilgrimage; the analogue film was then developed and the photos compiled in an album.
This piece is part of a larger work. The documentary project underway – entitled Sangre Nueva [New Blood] – is a tribute to all the Extremaduran migrants who left their villages in the middle of the last century to search for a better life and greater prosperity; they ended up in many towns and cities of the Basque Country where they became part of its human landscape.
José Jurado (Villanueva del Duque, Cordoba, 1984). José Jurado graduated in Fine Arts from the University of Granada in 2007. He has a Master’s Degree in Professional Photography and Documentary Reporting from EFTI, a Master’s in Art, Creation and Research from the Fine Arts Faculty at the Complutense University of Madrid, and an MA in Fine Art from Manchester Metropolitan University, Manchester (United Kingdom). Jurado works with different disciplines and has been the recipient of training grants (Iniciarte, Erasmus, Séneca, Fundesfor) and to produce artistic projects (Iniciarte, ECAT Toledo, Rafael Botí Foundation, Matadero Madrid). He has taken part in collective exhibitions at venues including the Sala del Canal de Isabel II in Madrid, Sala d’Art Jove in Barcelona, Espacio ECAT in Toledo, Off Limits in Madrid, the Asm28 Gallery in Madrid, Matadero Madrid, Villa Irís of the Botín Foundation in Santander and Sala Puerta Nueva in Cordoba.
