In 2014, Patrik Grijalvo worked on the the Photography as object project at the BilbaoArte Foundation. The project is made up of a photographic series in which he portrays the architecture of the Basque Country, establishing different levels of superimposition of the cut photographs. The idea of the project is inspired by Eduardo Chillida’s play on ‘gravitations’ and Jerry McMillan’s studies with cropped photography.
He has produced three sets of pieces: a series of small sketches, another set of twenty works measuring 50x50cm, and another in a larger format (150x150cm). He manages to create real depth by cutting the images and introducing negative space. Patrick weakens the link between the image and the real point of reference and vindicates its status as an object in order to develop the autonomy of the images. Consequently, the artist creates new objects that have no external reference. In this work, we see how a photograph arranged diagonally is inserted inside another larger one, creating a new fictitious space.
