Formas de oir [Ways of hearing] is about a screening in the works that goes far beyond its own materiality and calls on different senses, as a form can give the impression of a flavour, the thickness of red earth or recall the gloss of ceramics.
During the residency at BilbaoArte, the artist delved further into this research via the materiality of painting, by exploring the immersion in the three-dimensional space via paintings in different formats. In tandem, and using drawings that form part of her work process, she edited a series of screen prints as a way of rendering interests and processes visible that are often hidden in the final work.
Elvira conceives her canvases as a continuum: ideas that are repeated, vary and alter, and which often mean that she has delved deeply into all the possibilities that they contain. In her paintings, she explores forms of communication close to a pre-verbal language, which is often largely related to the classic discourses of the tradition of abstract painting, but she also includes details, forms or elements taken from non-western visual standpoints. Her work is closely linked with the sensory, avoiding closed meanings or unambiguous readings to open up an intangible, permeable and broad experience.
