Aitor Lajarín believes space explains the conditions. This may be reason that the common thread in his work is his interpretation of the spatiality in which he immerses objects and individuals. His painting has an aura of mystery derived from the scale in which he treats the elements he inserts into his intimate or urban scenes, the reduced range of colours and the compositional simplicity.
Aitor paints to reinterpret the sensations of spatiality to which we are exposed on a daily basis and that clearly condition both the general mood and experience in that environment. Drawing on very few resources and a high level of synthesis, he recreates scenarios and situations that function as a micro-story for the viewer. He explains that his interest in spatialising issues and treating them as relationship problems is his starting point for experimenting with the image. Thus, he recreates an unusual arrangement of elements that may be recognisable or familiar to everyone, but as part of an unusual and denatured arrangement. Rather than depicting how we inhabit space, his images recreate how space inhabits and conditions us.
Aitor Lajarin Encina (Vitoria-Gasteiz, 1977) is an interdisciplinary artist who lives and works in Fort Collins (Colorado, USA), where he is an associate professor of the Department of Art and History of Art at the State University. His most recent work is in the field of painting and animation. The artist there combines the languages of popular visual culture – such as comics, illustration and videogame computer graphics – and the tradition of geometric painting to roll out a series of entertaining vignettes that fall between social satire and existentialist digressions.
