One of the big questions of contemporary painting is the constant search for new formulas to work two-dimensionality from topical issues and tools. This is the starting point of Alberto Urquiza’s work as he draws on constant formal experimenting and also with respect to the material he uses, whether it be for his painting, his photo series or his installations. Urquiza does not thus seek to be radically original – which has now been done and dusted in the sphere of artistic production – but rather precisely to play with all the pre-existing narrative structures, formulas or techniques to condense them from his experience of the image.
His work generally stems from an accidental or incidental stimulus that motivates him to search for new formal solutions. Accordingly, he approaches his painting from the physical perspective of events and questioning progress as a one-directional and linear process.
