Michel Foucault showed that prison was not a mere place of imprisonment, but rather as the end model of the control mechanisms that modern power requires to discipline the free bodies of citizens. His biopolitical theory shows how power is an asymmetrical relationship between two parties, where there is always room left for resistance. This is exactly when interests Iñaki Gracenea in his artistic scrutiny of the world of the prison: the weapons built by the prisoners themselves stem from that ultimate seizing the initiative that is nearly impossible to neutralise. They are produced as instruments of violence that seeks to take back one’s own power; however, the artist could only explore the weapons that have already been seized. They are those failed shoots of violent freedom that he documents.
