The physical spaces where he lives, the places that he regularly crossed, were recurrent in Iñaki Sáez’s work at the time to which this image belongs. At that time, the artist documented the streets of Bilbao la Vieja and Galdakao, while taking photos of his workshop with the signs of his work.
And it is in those places, where the fabrics, the stereo, himself or the space that surrounds him are portrayed without hierarchies, where his work is conceived. They are documentary photos of a territory shared with ‘the others’, where corners, attitudes and impressions such as those that emerge in this image of the San Francisco neighbourhood are recognised. A neighbourhood that is depicted in sombre tones, framed in an empty street as the main theme. Three people (probably local residents) can barely be made out on one of its shores as absent presences.
Iñaki Sáez’s artistic mindset – through his paintings, drawings and photographs – is always packed with references to his own experience, to his inner world and to a living environment defined by immediacy, by the sign of the time in which his work is conceived.
