A presence is watching us. It seems to be a small mammal, a fox. Its head is tilted up as if it has just become aware of our existence. We can only see its front legs behind it; they are firmly placed on the ground, but ready for the fox to spring into action, perhaps towards us or perhaps fleeing from us. In the background, its tail can barely be made out in the twilight. It is a beautiful documentary photograph. By merely inverting the image, Karlos Martínez manages to infuse it with an almost irresolvable ambiguity. The dark background, the head positioned below, the small ears make us feel that we are looking at a bat rather than the fox. The simplicity of the gesture and the emphasising of the ambiguity inherent to all representational procedure are different elements of the installation work of Karlos Martínez.
