Suberviola develops in her pictorial practice a distinctive way of constructing the image through the superimposition of deconstructed images and layers of paint on the canvas. Her work calls into question issues such as the replacement of direct observation of reality with its reproduction in contemporary culture through mobile devices, and the influence this has on our perception of it.
The project Seleccionar, copiar, pegar, borrar explores the relationship between painting and contemporary visual culture, understanding today’s image as a reality mediated by screens, interfaces and platforms. Building on an analysis of dynamics intrinsic to the digital image – layers, editing, reproduction and manipulation – the proposal transfers this logic to the realm of painting through large-format works made on paper and canvas, while also employing industrial tools such as a laser cutter. Inspired by editing tools such as Photoshop, the process proposes an editable painting, open to change and constant reorganisation. The project seeks to foster a dialogue between the manual and the digital, exploring new forms of perception and materiality of the contemporary image.
Amaya Suberviola (Mendavia, Navarre, 1993) is a visual artist who has been based in Bilbao since 2011. She holds a degree in Fine Art, specialising in painting and graphic art, and completed a Master’s in Painting at the EHU in 2016. Some of her most recent works have been recognised with the BMW Painting Prize 2025 and First Prize at Ertibil 2025. She has also had the opportunity to take part in residencies such as the Guggenheim’s Basque Artist Program in New York in 2024, a period that helped her to articulate new lines of work and fresh perspectives.
