Untitled, by Mikel Escobales, continues the creative process started during his residency at Gasworks, where the artist worked with metal fabrics, neoprene, paper and polyethylene foam. It combines pictorial and sculptural dimensions via an approach based on filtering, exploring the sensory and physical properties of the materials used.
The fabrics are painted as they float on water: the pigment rarely keeps its original texture and sticks to the fabric by means of evaporation. The intensity of the application, the artist’s gesture and the involuntary movements of the water determine the final outcome, where control and fate are in a single process. Therefore, the work reveals not only how pigment fixes to the fabric, but also a gesture paused in time: an order that is interrupted, a choreography between material and liquid element that allows the work to be experienced as a record of temporariness, action and transformation.
