Two very different techniques converge in the production of this image. Over a digital print, Jelena Sredanovic has applied a series of almost translucent ink layers using woodcut printing. These layers create a very subtle effect of superimposition that adds nuance and depth to the resulting image. A sharp tension (both formal and procedural) is established between the precise definition of the underlying digital print and the softly diffused warmth of the woodcut layers, in which the grain of the wood can even be perceived. In this way, the subject matter recedes in importance, and it is the structural qualities of the piece that come to the foreground.
