Registration open until 18 November
A creative workshop centred on the book as a medium for visually narrating and structuring one’s own life (or a substantial part of it) through one’s own or other people’s photographs, texts, drawings and any other elements that can be included on a page.
Led by Raúl Hevia
From Monday 30 November to Friday 4 December.
The Book of Your Life (El libro de tu vida) is a reflective project aimed at any creator who wishes to explore the book format as a creative strategy. The workshop centres on several ideas: how to construct a book using images taken from a family album (your own or someone else’s) that creatively summarise one’s own life (an exercise in identity, with autobiography as the narrative); how to craft a coherent and truthful narrative through images created by others, through appropriation, borrowing and the reversal of roles, whereby the reader and subject of the images becomes the author; how to translate the ‘narrative life’ of analogue images (many of which we have now lost track of) through a process of synthesis and digital processing to create or recreate a new format.
The aim is to work from a set of existing images and, through the workshop, arrive at other images and new ideas.
DAILY PROGRAMME AND METHODOLOGY
Day 1. General overview of the workshop. Background and examples. Description of the working tools. The blank page.
Objectives: to develop a general understanding of the background and to outline the specific features of the workshop. To familiarise oneself with the materials.
Day 2. Who am I through the photographs of others? Developing one’s own project.
Objectives: to define each participant’s creative criteria. The effective versus the affective. Experimenting with different techniques.
Day 3. The blank page. Page-by-page storytelling.
Objectives: to establish an effective way of working. To apply one’s own criteria and to question the general criteria.
Day 4. Process and workflow.
Objectives: to apply content to form. To encourage free expression and experimentation.
Day 5. Presenting each project aloud. The individual project as an editorial project.
