As part of the Zinebi 53 Bilbao International Documentary & Short Film Festival, Fundación BilbaoArte Fundazioa, in co-operation with the ARTEKO gallery in Donostia-San Sebastián, presents DE CINE: proyecciones y fotogramas [“Films: Showings & Stills”] an exhibition of photos and films by young artists resident in Guipuzcoa Iván Gómez (Irún, Guipúzcoa, 1984) and Ibon Mainar (Bayonne, France, 1978).
Ibon Mainar’s work started out as a tribute to the film projector, that producer of phantasmagorical images. He decided to focus those images on nature (a mythical subject if ever there was one), thus redefining the invention with the enigmatic aura of its early years. But that focus on nature, much as Ibon admired it, was just a passing phase – as indeed all magical or phantasmagorical apparitions are. It is reflected here in the photos that documented his incursion into the field.
For his part, Iván Gómez starts out from the decontextualisation of still photos from a film archive that he came across. He works on them using traditional montage and collage techniques and replaces colour by a chemical emulsion of black and white. He attacks the photos directly (with the grain and by scratching the celluloid) and enlarges the images so that they become characters in his stories. He thus gives them a new meaning, and presents a series of photos that brings us back to a film image told in a new way.
They both use photographic images as ways of presenting work that is intended first and foremost as a projection, to resolve the tension with the filmed source material (projector – still photo). They thus restructure and resolve their work in the form of photographic images.
