Literature as an artistic tool. Presentation of the book: “For Women: An Unequal History”

BilbaoArte hosts the presentation of the book “Por mujer. Una historia desigual” (For Women: An Unequal History) by Cristina Gutiérrez Meurs.

The literary event will take place on March 9 at 6:30 p.m. at ArtHouse Zinema.

Her practice intersects between the visual arts, literature, and social issues, converging in the condemnation and denunciation of a whole range of violence that has historically and atavistically been unleashed against women. Gutiérrez Meurs addresses issues that appear in her novels or that are linked to her context and activism through her visual and literary production.

“Por mujer. Una historia desigual” (For Women: An Unequal History) is the third book published by artist, writer, and activist Cristina Gutiérrez Gutiérrez Meurs. Published by Txalaparta in 2025, this work focuses on denouncing violence against women from an approach that combines the visual arts and literature. A chance encounter uncovers an invisible thread that connects women from different eras, whose lives and voices resist silence.

With a keen eye and a steady hand, Cristina Gutiérrez Meurs follows in the footsteps of those who, simply because they were women, bore the weight of their times: writers, artists, healers, teachers, and so many others. Fragments of letters, news articles, testimonies, and memoirs are woven together to form a mosaic that resists oblivion. It brings together lives marked by centuries of repression, showing how generations of women have had to confront social and cultural norms to this day. This is a personal and collective journey in which words, images, experiences, and stories converge to vindicate those who, despite everything, refused to stop being themselves.

Her drift towards writing is related to a chance event: meeting and talking to a victim of baby theft, which led her to write her first novel, Lo que no me quisiste contar (What You Didn’t Want to Tell Me). In 2018, she published her second literary work, Eva no fue la primera (Eve Wasn’t the First), a story focused on violence against women.

Both themes are interwoven to denounce a range of violence that has historically and atavistically been unleashed against women simply because they are women.
