AMAYA SUBERVIOLA

In her pictorial practice, Suberviola establishes a distinctive method of constructing images through the superimposition of deconstructed visuals and layers of paint on canvas. Her work addresses questions such as the replacement of direct observation of reality with its reproduction in contemporary culture via mobile devices, and the influence this has on our perception of it. Her attention to the inherent structure of elements and her exploration of space lead her to invert or alter her schemes, creating abstract images that, in fact, are inspired by—or derive from—figurative elements that capture her attention.

Seleccionar / copiar / pegar / borrar (Select / copy / paste / delete)  delves into the use of digital tools for editing and manipulating images, not as mere technical means, but as creative systems capable of generating new compositional strategies. Its aim is to draw analogies between digital functionalities and manual processes, incorporating them into pictorial practice as their own languages. She is particularly interested in how the technical and conceptual knowledge of these tools can trigger new ideas, open up unexpected paths and enrich painting through its internal structure. The artist does not seek to replace traditional techniques with digital ones, but to generate a dialogue between both dimensions, so that technology becomes a source of renewal for painting, not a replacement.

Amaya Suberviola (Mendavia, 1993) gained her degree in Art, specialising in painting and graphics, from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), where she also completed a Master’s degree in Painting (2016). Her work reflects on the construction of images in contemporary society and the digital era, the norms that end up affecting their media, and the changes or alterations that these containers produce in the resulting image.
