Project Titie – Interstates of Becoming

Interstates of Becoming explores the relationship between human beings and their shared environments, highlighting the mutual effects that humans and mountains exert on one another throughout their interdependent life cycles. Centered on the Himalayan mountain range in northwestern India and following the Hindustan–Tibet Road, the work depicts the current, constructed, and deconstructed elements of this ongoing interaction, emphasizing the futility of environmental control, the exploitation of inhabitants and workers, and the impact of large-scale hydrological development in a seismic region.

Gareth Phillips (Wales, UK, 1979) is a photographer who explores contemporary definitions of the photobook, creating them as objects, sculptures and installations. He has an established international record of exhibitions and awards, having been a finalist for the Aesthetica Art Prize 2023, the KG+ Kyotographie Japan Award, and the Gomma New Flavours Award, as well as winning the RAKFAF Festival Award 2023 for Sculpture. His work was also recently featured in the Spatial Awareness issue of the British Journal of Photography. A former participant of the Reflexions Masterclass, he divides his time between the United Kingdom and Spain.
