JAVIER LOZANO

Javier Lozano

His work lies at the intersection of drawing, painting and independent publishing. The artist finds in the comic strip the ideal medium to make his voice heard and to explore a range of styles, from everyday humour to poetic abstraction. He has published two comic books: Welcome, published by Belleza Infinita, and Ser Amado, published by Fulgencio Pimentel. Alongside this publishing work, he maintains a steady output of self-published fanzines and a practice closely related to painting.

During his residency at BilbaoArte, he is presenting The Book of Changes, a project in which he undertakes a pictorial investigation based on the I Ching’s system of hexagrams and centred on the relationship between figuration and irrationality, using Susan Sontag’s Against Interpretation and Carl Gustav Jung’s Prologue to the I Ching as his theoretical framework. The project is structured around the I Ching as a symbolic system based on 64 hexagrams, understood not as a closed system but as an open structure that enables processes of image production to be triggered through chance, association and interpretation. The starting point is the affinity between the operational logic of the hexagrams and the artist’s own pictorial practice, in which symbolism and ambiguity occupy a central place. The drawings are conceived as a field of formal experimentation for the development of oil paintings derived from these processes; accompanied by a parallel critical text, it is a process that seeks to address issues relating to belief systems, interpretation and symbolic thought in the contemporary context. Taken as a whole, The Book of Changes is conceived as an expanded project in which ambiguity, chance and uncertainty are not understood as limitations, but as productive conditions for the generation of meaning within the image.

Javier Lozano Jaén (Albacete, 1981). He holds a degree in Fine Art from the University of Castilla-La Mancha. In recent years, he has focused his work on publishing, drawing and comics, alongside his teaching. He has recently returned to painting with two solo exhibitions in 2025 (Finito, Anti, Bilbao) and 2026 (Cueste lo que cueste, Dissidents Studio, Valencia), reviving a central theme in his career.
