Jon Ibala focuses on the relationship between the form of the objects around us and the reason for their existence, particularly those that have been with us for a long time. Objects would not be as they are without the influence of their surroundings: he understands this relationship as a interplay of power and vulnerability. He is interested in the complexity that arises when something has to carve out a path for itself in an environment that denies it its natural movement; not so much from the perspective of weakness, but rather from the beauty of resilience.
Through his artistic practice, he pushes all these meanings to their limits, exploring the boundaries of form and the instinct of objects, and thereby imagining narratives that feel both new and familiar to us at the same time.
Jon Ibala (Mungia, 1996). He holds a Master’s degree in painting from the University of the Basque Country (EHU) and has held a number of exhibitions, the most recent of which include (2025) “90km aho zirika”, a group exhibition curated by Gema Intxausti and part of the HARRIAK project at Zabalarte Kultur Etxea (Agurain), and “Gau beilako eleak”, a solo exhibition at Portalea Kultur Etxea (Eibar).
