Maider Fernández Iriarte (Donostia, 1988) is an educator and filmmaker. She studied Social Education at the University of the Basque Country, Television and Film Production at the School of Film and Video (ESCIVI), and also completed a Master’s Degree in Creative Documentary at Pompeu Fabra University and the Film Programme at Torcuato Di Tella University in Buenos Aires. She has also participated in various educational projects related to film, such as Cinema en curs and the audiovisual cooperative Drac Màgic. She was part of the Las chicas de Pasaik collective. Her work has been exhibited and recognised at numerous festivals such as Mar del Plata, Málaga, Göteborg, Zinebi and Gijón, and at art centres including DA2000, Institut Valencià d’Art Modern and The Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow, among others. Her first feature film, Las letras de Jordi, premiered at the San Sebastián Film Festival in 2019 in the New Directors section and received three special mentions from the jury at Alcances, L’Alternativa and Cinespaña Toulouse.
Her project presents research into the scientific techniques applied in the development of the agriculture and assisted reproduction industries, which will result in a video essay that seeks to reflect on the way in which science (and society) attempt to expand the limits of natural elements and life.
