My Lunch With Anna is a portrait and an interpreted dialogue between choreographers Alain Buffard and Anna Halprin, in which gesture is combined with words. Filmed in 2005 over the course of five staged lunches in open and closed spaces, it captures conversations that revolve around work processes, their respective experiments with movement, and everyday gestures.
Anna Halprin (USA, 1920-2021), an emblematic figure in American postmodern dance, questioned the diversity of movement based on research into our everyday gestures that began in the late 1950s with her San Francisco Dancers’ Workshop.
Alain Buffard (France, 1960-2013) began dancing in 1978 with Alwin Nikolais at the CNDC in Angers and, in the 1980s, became a performer for Brigitte Farges and Daniel Larrieu. In 2001, promoting his creative work in the field known as ‘non-dance’, he created “Dispositif 3.1,” which brought together Anne Laurent, Claudia Triozzi, and dance historian Laurence Louppe on the same stage. His works followed in the footsteps of the performative pieces of Anna Halprin, whom he met in 1996.
