The works of Grijalvo which are created by observing through the lens of camera and presented on flat tangible surface of photography, interestingly condense the matter of space in art. The idea of ‘space’ goes through a principle of his works. It also closely related to the subject matter that he has chosen for his works, architectures.
The artist takes photo of natural elements and artificially built structures. Then he develops and prints them out in black and white negative images. Afterwards the photo images are attached on shaped mount, which hide and present only natural objects or artificial ones by artist’s intention. The technique of multi-layers transparent images turns into shaped mounting which emphasize the atmosphere of space rather than physical one. The black negative images, strongly contrasts to the white background (the mount) and the shaped mount which selectively present part of images, make the familiar space with leaves, streams of trees or rocks, turn into totally different atmosphere of uncanny and strange.
Patrik Grijalvo 1984 vive y trabaja en Bilbao. Estudió Bellas Artes con la especialidad de imagen audiovisual y fotografía en la Universidad del País Vasco y realizó un año lectivo en la Academia Athens School of Fine Arts. Su obra se caracteriza por la precisión y el rigor constructivo derivado de una honda y sofisticada reflexión sobre la forma arquitectónica, la cual convierte en imagen fotográfica re-elaborada con un significado expandido del espacio edificado.
Su trabajo ha sido expuesto en museos como el Guggenheim Bilbao, Seoul Museum of Art SEMA, MUA de Alicante, Würth la Rioja y en ferias como Scope Basel, Scope Nueva York, Contemporary Istambul, Art Bodensee, Kunst Zurich, Swab, YIA Art Fair Bruselas entre otras.
Ha sido becado por el Seoul Museum of Art, el Kunsthaus Bregenz Museum, la Ciudad Internacional de las Artes de Paris, el Het Wilde Weten de Rotterdam, la Fundación Bilbao Arte, el Instituto Vasco Etxepare, la Diputación Foral de Bizkaia y el Gobierno Vasco.
Recientemente ha recibido el Premio al mejor artista joven colección Mango y el Premio al mejor concepto colección Marset en la feria SWAB Barcelona.
