Exhibition: «Some Possibilities (Using Rubbish and Simulation)» Miren Doiz

Miren Doiz’s work starts from the pictorial and then goes beyond its limits, expanding in space and including the event and the viewer. She constantly questions her own artistic practice, which has recently moved close to sculpture and a critical position on the continuous production/destruction of goods/materials that characterise our era. The artist uses material she comes across and collects from the street. Material that tells us about what is happening in today’s society from the environmental, social and political perspectives, including housing speculation and greed, the ongoing reforms and evictions, waste generation, and the status of the artist.

While at university, she began to deconstruct the canvas with the aim of expanding the painting in space. Drawing on her pictorial vocation, she sought to subvert the traditional manner of painting and to overcome its two dimensionality by shifting towards sculpture. Changing her usual way of working, the way she had learned to paint. She ditched paint as a material, which resulted in pictorial works in some cases, but in which she did not use it and even relinquished the stroke and the brush. At other times, paint appears directly on the space and recalls the notion of expanded painting, where we are invited to experience it from within, not from outside. In short, to inhabit the painting.

Resorting to items recovered from waste and then stripping them down or simplifying their forms recalls the recycling process and raises concern for the environmental problem and ecological aspects.  Using dry paint and empty pots recalls the circular economy and, to quote the artist, ‘working with what I have and what I am’ or ‘dealing with mine’. Discarded glass that becomes works of art, easily available poor or precarious materials that act as the starting point or material for projects, and even items she has found whose function changes in a new life.

Some Possibilities (Using Rubbish and Simulation) starts from the works produced during her residency at BilbaoArte from 2024 to 2025; they emerged from her personal concerns as a precarious artist as regards what is happening in the world from an environmental, social and political perspective. Thus, availing herself of items she has found (Objet trouvé) and retrieved from the street, she explores housing speculation, reforms, evictions and waste generation, along with simulation and our impact on the environment.
